Kyle ... at play in the "Tidal Pool" The early evening sunlight enhanced the warmth of color and pastel hues found in the sky, beach and water. The rolling whitecaps brought motion from the horizon indicating depth and distance. The ocean is visible but softened, which commands full attention to the child. Soon after the sitting began, Kyle, following the playful callings of his imagination, became lost in play. His movements and expressions were completely spontaneous. As result, his portrait captures a sense of motion and reality which produces an image with a natural look. |

Philosophy... BEACH PORTRAITS Sunset...moonrise... We take one beach sitting a day. We use the early evening light, "sweet light", when you can look into the sun and not squint. From the beginning of the sitting with its halo of golden light, to the end of the sitting, the light changes so dramatically you would never know the photographs were taken on the same evening. After the sun goes down there is a period of light, just a few minutes, when the sun is below the horizon but bounces its light off the sky. Sometimes you have color in the sky. Sometimes there is so much color it reminds you of pink cotton candy. You never know what you are going to have to work with. It's always a surprise and an adventure. Overcast days allow us to start earlier and work longer. This soft, glow light is a very flattering and pleasing light to work with. With white clothing it gives more of a high key effect. Clothing with some color will lessen the high key effect and add contrast to the portrait. As with all our sittings, whether on the beach, in the studio or the garden, we try to make our photographic sessions fun. Children are usually completely unaware that they are being photographed. Thus we are able to capture a sense of movement, a natural expression and a breathtaking moment of childhood. We will initially discuss the portrait with you either in person or on the phone, depending on your distance from the studio. The emphasis at this time is to understand what you envision. Such things as mood, composition, clothing, setting, size, where the portrait will hang, and price are addressed. All of these things will help to ultimately attain a portrait that provides a lifetime of enjoyment. |
