Lindsey...to hold in little hands I like to introduce the palest touch of color to emphasize the lack of color in a photograph. The result is a very dreamy, serene image. Basically this is a simple picture. A simplicity that dramatically unfolds with the pure perfection of a child. Since appearing in an issue of VICTORIA MAGAZINE, "Lindsey" has become one of my most recognizable photographs. "Soft natural light and vintage memorabilia give Virginia photographer Frank Van Valkenburg's images of children a timeless quality."--VICTORIA MAGAZINE |

Philosophy... STUDIO PORTRAITS... Bathed in the Softness of Light When it comes to our color portraits, we are natural light photographers. We like to photograph without the intrusion of artificial lights. People, especially children, are more comfortable without flashes of light going off in their face. Our studio is located in a 100-year old Victorian house. The only change we made to this house was to have a large window installed in the studio shooting room. This window provides the single light source we need for our portraits. A single light source is all about the play of light and shadow and adds depth to a portrait. Since natural light is more difficult to work with because of the changing subtleties of that light, we have worked hard to perfect our technique by lens choice, camera angle, shutter speed, choice of film and general composition. Natural light gives a painting-like quality to photographs. If you look at a John Singer Sargent painting, the face and clothes are clear, but the background is dark and dramatic. Natural light is about this play of light and shadow and projects a mood and feeling. We will initially discuss the portrait with you either in person or on the phone, depending on your distance from the studio. The emphasis at this time is to understand what you envision. Such things as mood, composition, clothing, setting, size, where the portrait will hang, and price are addressed. All of these things will help to ultimately attain a portrait that provides a lifetime of enjoyment. |
